Lake Sainte-Croix Temperature: A Lake That Warms Slowly

The Lake Sainte-Croix is a 76-meter-deep dam lake, fed by the Verdon. This considerable water mass takes time to warm in spring, but retains heat in September — a temperature lag that makes early autumn one of the best periods for swimming.

Here are average water temperatures on the lake's surface, recorded at the main beaches (Aiguines, Les Salles, Bauduen). Temperatures vary 1-2°C by depth and wind exposure.

Temperature Month by Month

🌸 May: 14-16°C — For the Brave

The lake barely begins warming after winter. Swimming remains cool and reserved for lovers of keen sensations. Conversely, it's an ideal period for kayaking (wetsuit recommended) and hiking around the lake.

☀️ June: 18-20°C — Pleasant on Hot Days

Water becomes tolerable, especially on sunny afternoons. Beaches are still uncrowded — a real pleasure for those seeking calm. Pont de Galetas offers the warmest waters thanks to shallow depth at gorge entrance.

🌞 July: 22-24°C — Ideal Temperature

Peak season begins. Water is perfect for swimming, pedal boating, paddling and all water activities. It's also the busiest period — arrive early for a good beach spot.

🔥 August: 24-25°C — Peak Heat

The hottest month. Water reaches maximum, sometimes 26°C on surface after a heat wave. Comfortable swimming all day.

🍂 September: 20-22°C — The Secret Season

Thanks to thermal inertia, the lake stays surprisingly warm in September while crowds have left the region. It's our favorite period: warm water, deserted beaches, golden light.

🍃 October: 16-18°C — End of Season

Water gradually cools. Swimming remains possible on sunny early October afternoons, but discouraged late month. Autumn colors around the lake are stunning.

  • Les Salles-sur-Verdon Beaches — Sandy beach, water shallow for several meters. Surface temperature slightly above average.
  • Bauduen Beach — East bank, often protected from mistral. Pleasant water.
  • Lake Center — Deeper, surface water stays warm but you can feel cooler layers diving down.

Lake Water Quality

Lake Sainte-Croix benefits from excellent water quality. Thermal motors are banned (only electric boats allowed), guaranteeing clean, unpolluted water. The striking turquoise color is due to micro-particles of limestone suspended in Verdon water.

Can You Swim in May at Lake Sainte-Croix?
