The Gorges du Verdon offer a different natural display each season. But what is the best time to visit the Verdon? Should you come in peak summer to enjoy swimming, or favor spring to avoid crowds? And is the shoulder season worth a visit?
This guide details weather, attendance and available activities month by month to help you plan your ideal Verdon getaway.

The Verdon’s Climate: Mediterranean Sun Tempered by Altitude
Sommaire de l'article
Located between 500 and 1,500 m altitude, the Gorges du Verdon benefit from a temperate Mediterranean climate moderated by elevation. Result: hot but manageable summers (25-32 °C), mild winter days (8-12 °C) and approximately 300 days of sunshine per year. The region receives little summer rainfall, but spring and fall experience brief but sometimes intense storms.
Lac de Sainte-Croix also moderates summer heat: it is always 2-3 °C cooler by the lake than in Aix-en-Provence or Marseille.
Average monthly temperatures
Spring (April-June): The Ideal Season for Hikers
Spring is the season preferred by those in the know. Nature erupts: wildflowers in the gorges, lavender fields coming into bloom around Valensole, lively Verdon waters fed by snowmelt. Temperatures are pleasant (18-25 °C) and visitor numbers remain moderate.
In April-May, the viewpoints of the Gorges du Verdon offer stunning panoramas without a single queue. It is also the ideal period for Martel trail hiking — perfect temperatures, trails still quiet.
In June, swimming begins at the lake (water 19-21 °C) and water activities gradually open. It is the perfect compromise: fine weather, few people, everything is open.

Summer (July-August): Peak Season, Between Swimming and Crowds
It is the most popular period — and for good reason. The sun shines almost daily, lake water reaches 22-25 °C, and all activities are in full swing: pedalo in the gorges, kayaking, paddleboarding, canyoning, paragliding, climbing.
The downside: visitor numbers peak. Parking at the Pont du Galetas and popular beaches fills up by 10 AM in July-August. Gorges roads (D71, D952) see slowdowns, especially on weekends.
Tips for enjoying summer without the crowds

Fall (September-October): The Verdon’s Best-Kept Secret
September is the month preferred by locals. Visitor numbers drop, temperatures stay summery (22-27 °C), and lake water is still 20-22 °C — perfect for swimming. Autumn colors begin tinting the oak and pine forests around the gorges.
In October, days shorten but remain pleasant. It is the season for hiking without the heat, quiet Provençal markets and rediscovered villages. Discover the hidden secrets of the Gorges without meeting anyone.

Winter (November-March): The Verdon at Rest
Winter is the quietest season. Many shops and restaurants close, water activities are halted, and the lake may drop several meters. But the Verdon in winter has its charm: low-angle light on the cliffs, solitude on the trails, pure blue sky.
Sunny days (frequent in December-January) offer memorable hikes with temperatures of 8-14 °C. And starry nights are of exceptional clarity — the Verdon is far from any light pollution.
