Nicknamed "the Mecca of climbing", the Verdon is one of the most legendary climbing sites in Europe. Its limestone walls reach 700 metres in height, its routes cover all grades from 4a to 8b+, and its multi-pitch classics rank among the world's finest. The history of climbing here dates back to the 1970s — since then, the Verdon has been an absolute reference.

The two banks: two worlds

  • Right bank (La Palud-sur-Verdon) — the kingdom of historic multi-pitch routes. L'Escalès and its classics like La Demande and Pichenibule: extreme verticality, a sheer drop to the green waters below. Intermediate to expert level.
  • Left bank (Aiguines) — more modern and accessible routes. Four crags: Bauchet, Les Cavaliers, Sallières, Les Hauts-Vernis. All levels, ideal for beginners.

🚣 Kayak & Paddle on Lake Sainte-Croix

Lake Sainte-Croix is the perfect starting point for a kayak or paddle outing. From the Pont de Galetas, you gradually enter the canyon between 700-metre-high cliffs. The calm waters are suitable for all levels.

The iconic spot. Pedal boat, kayak and SUP rental (MYC Plage). Paddle up the first 3 km of the canyon with magical reflections in the morning. Ideal half-day family outing.

🟢 Aiguines Beach

Calm launch point from Aiguines, a quieter alternative in peak season. Panoramic views over the cliffs.

The perfect introductory trail. Smooth paths around lac de Sainte-Croix, constant views over the turquoise waters, start possible from Aiguines. Ideal for families or discovering the region on foot.

🟡 Viewpoints Trail – from Aiguines

Distance: 22 km · Elevation: 650 m · Time: 3h–4h · Level: intermediate
A chain of Gorges viewpoints from the belvédères. The Plein Voir viewpoint (alt. 1,064 m) offers an exceptional 360° panorama. Varied terrain: track, single track, rocky sections.

🟠 Grand Canyon du Verdon — Ridgeline Loop

Distance: 35 km · Elevation: 950 m · Time: 5h–6h · Level: experienced
A loop incorporating the Route des Crêtes, the northern viewpoints and the Ourbes ridgeline. Technical terrain, some exposed sections. Bring your own supplies.

🔴 Verdon Ultra Trail — Grand Tour

Distance: 50 km · Elevation: 1 200 m · Time: 6h–9h · Level: expert
Complete tour of the gorges via Moustiers, La Palud-sur-Verdon and Aiguines. Full commitment, self-sufficiency essential. For experienced trail runners with good knowledge of the terrain only.

  • Trail du Verdon — official spring race from La Palud-sur-Verdon, 30 and 60 km distances.
  • Trail des Gorges — autumn event from Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, exceptional panoramas.

Practical information

  • 📅 Season: March–June and September–November. In July–August, set off before 7am — risk of heatstroke on exposed ridgelines.
  • 🗺️ Navigation: download GPX tracks before setting off — no mobile signal in the gorge depths.
  • 🌡️ Weather: check for thunderstorms — ridgelines are fully exposed. Avoid in case of yellow or orange weather alerts.
  • 🏡 Ideal base: Aiguines — 5 min from all trailheads, between lake and gorges.

The ultimate beginner circuit: forest tracks and smooth paths around lac de Sainte-Croix. Start from Aiguines. Accessible to standard MTBs and veterans with e-bikes.

🔵 From Springs to the Gorges du Verdon

Distance: 38 km · Elevation: 850 m · Time: 4h–5h · Difficulty: blue/red
The signature loop of the Espace VTT-FFC Verdon. Alternating plateau (Valensole), oak forests and balcony trails above the gorges. One of the most complete circuits in the area, with panoramic views of the Route des Crêtes.

🔴 Aiguines – Pont de Galetas Descent (Enduro)

Distance: 15 km · Elevation: 150 m · Descent: 650 m · Time: 1h30–2h · Difficulty: red/black
The most committed technical descent in the area. Woodland single track, exposed cliff section, arriving at the Pont de Galetas. Shuttle or vehicle return required. For experienced riders only.

⚫ Valensole Plateau – Grand MTB Tour

Distance: 55 km · Elevation: 1 200 m · Time: 5h–7h · Difficulty: black
Complete tour incorporating the Valensole plateau and the Verdon ridgelines. Full commitment, self-sufficiency essential. Only attempt with thorough knowledge of the terrain or accompanied by a local guide.

Where to rent a mountain bike?

  • Moustiers-Sainte-Marie / Sainte Croix du Verdon — bike rental shops with delivery available in the Verdon area.
  • Castellane — starting base for the eastern side, e-bikes available.

Practical information

  • 📅 Season: March–June and September–November. Limestone surfaces slippery after rain — wait 24 h before riding.
  • 🗺️ Signage: all FFC circuits are marked with coloured directional posts (green/blue/red/black). Download GPX tracks as backup.
  • 📱 Mobile signal: non-existent in the gorge depths — inform someone before setting off.

What sports activities can you do in the Gorges du Verdon?

The Gorges du Verdon offer an exceptional playground for outdoor sports: climbing (1,500+ routes), kayaking and paddleboarding on Lake Sainte-Croix, hiking (Blanc-Martel trail, Plein Voir viewpoint), tandem paragliding from Aiguines, trail running and mountain biking on 250 km of marked circuits.

What is the best time for sports activities in the Verdon?

May–June and September–October are ideal: pleasant weather, fewer crowds, comfortable water temperature. In July–August, water activities are at their best but arriving before 9 am is essential. Climbing is practised from April to October, with a break in midsummer on exposed walls.

Do you need to be an experienced athlete to enjoy the Verdon?

No. Each activity offers beginner-friendly options: pedal boats and kayaks on calm waters, a 2.5-hour panoramic hike from Aiguines, tandem paragliding from age 6, beginner mountain bike circuits around the lake. Families with children can enjoy all activities by choosing the appropriate options.

Can you rent equipment on site?

Yes: kayaks, pedal boats and SUPs are available at the Pont de Galetas (MYC Plage). Climbing equipment can be rented in Aiguines (Rock'n Wild). Mountain bikes (including e-bikes) are available from several rental points in the area. For paragliding, equipment is provided by the instructor.

Do you need to book in advance?

In July–August, absolutely: paragliding flights, climbing courses and Blanc-Martel shuttles sell out several weeks in advance. Kayaks and pedal boats can be rented on the spot, but early-morning slots go fast. In May–June and September, booking is still recommended for guided climbing.
