Sunset at Lake Sainte-Croix: 7 Best Spots from Aiguines

Sunset at Lake Sainte-Croix: Why Aiguines Is the Best Starting Point

Lake Sainte-Croix stretches over 2,200 hectares between the Gorges du Verdon and the Valensole plateau. Every evening, the sun descends due West, catching the limestone cliffs before sinking into the turquoise water — a spectacle few alpine lakes can match. From Aiguines, perched at 825 m above the lake, you can reach seven exceptional viewpoints in under 15 minutes on foot or by car, tested in all weather and every season.

Stay on paths, park in designated areas, take your rubbish with you. This landscape is worth earning — and preserving.

Choosing the Right Moment: Golden Hour, Blue Hour, Wind & Clouds

Light. That's what makes all the difference. Aim for the golden hour (roughly 30–45 min before official sunset) for warm tones and soft relief, then stay for the blue hour (10–30 min after), when the sky deepens and the lake's reflections become uniform — perfect for long exposures and silhouettes.

In the Verdon, one factor often matters more than the official time: the terrain. The sun can disappear earlier behind the canyon ridges. Favour west-facing or elevated viewpoints — the belvederes above Aiguines are ideal — and arrive a little early to follow the light to the very last ray.

Wind & water surface. Calm evenings offer perfect mirror reflections. With mistral or a steady breeze, the surface ripples: fewer reflections, but often a remarkably clear sky after the wind passes. Look for a sheltered spot (hillside, treeline, enclosed beach).

"Friendly" clouds. Thin cirrus or a few altocumulus to the south-west can ignite at the very end; a uniform veil kills the scene. Partly cloudy days are often the best.

Where to check the exact sunset time?

Pro tip: set an alert 2 h before sunset on the day, then leave 60 min before if the spot requires a short walk. Headlamp, light layer… and let the sky do the rest.

What Season Gives the Most Beautiful Sunset at Lake Sainte-Croix?

The Verdon's light changes dramatically from month to month — and so does the lake. For the best of each season, see our Verdon off-season guide (spring, autumn, winter).

  • Spring (April – June): the lake refills after winter, lush green vegetation, soft light. Few visitors — best photos without the crowds.
  • Summer (July – August): late sunsets (9:30–10 pm), pleasantly warm air. Waterside spots are very busy: arrive an hour early. Head to elevated belvederes to escape the crowds. By day, it's also the ideal season for swimming at Lake Sainte-Croix.
  • Autumn (September – November): raking light, gold and rust reflections on the shores. The lake starts to drop, beaches empty. The ideal season for photographers.
  • Winter (December – March): early dusk (5–5:30 pm), lake at its lowest but stunning colours. Some spots can be snow-covered at altitude.

September remains the best compromise: water still warm, autumn light, reduced crowds. It's also when the gorges start turning golden.
